Scope of Work

  • Be a part of the design, development and launch of a new urban digital media publication for APIAs on topics ranging from style and culture to politics, poetry and pop culture
  • Research and solicit monthly article concepts and permissions
  • Plan, communicate with and coordinate contributors, including as part of regularly co-facilitated editorial meetings
  • Assist in all internal needs of a startup publication from helping creating content to supporting brand initiatives, coordinating interviews and and PR events
  • Assist in all web and design matters, including working with consultants and stakeholders to develop and maintain an attractive, user-friendly website
  • Conceptualize, research, and write new content
  • Create content to support The Diaspora Project initiative and Urbanity, LLC, including communications and DEI related content
  • Develop and implement social media, marketing and promotions strategy
  • Research and implement SEO best practices and grow pre- and post-launch subscribers
  • Assist with photo and video and other multimedia production and project management
  • Work closely with editorial team to research, organize and catalog content
  • Update and maintain publication related files, lists and relationship management technology, invitations and other related materials
  • Conduct administrative and operations duties
    • Track and manage receipt of content and permissions
    • Manage mailings, database, related expenses and budgeting
    • Conduct independent research on design, platforms, contributors, best practices, etc. as directed

Qualifications/Additional Requirements

  • Strong writing, editing and communications skills
  • Extremely organized and detail oriented
  • Passion for urban arts and culture, with a preference for an understanding of hip hop culture and the elements, and/or other historic NYC cultures
  • Ability to stay on top of moving parts, multiple communications with multiple stakeholders, ability to meet deadlines and communicate effectively about work
  • Ability to “get your hands dirty” and put out fires related to real-time events and project schedules
  • Good eye and/or skill in graphic and web design
  • Ability to carry projects through to completion, take accountability for work and hold others accountable to deadlines to meet project goals and milestones
  • Study or experience in communications, marketing, advertising journalism or related field
  • Self-starter who is willing to pitch in and work in cross-functional teams
  • Excels in fast-paced, high-volume and deadline-driven environment
